This publication examines the process that links a vague commemoration of the Via Augusta’s second millennium with the centenary of Ignacio Villalonga’s call for a railway line along the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula to connect with Trans-Pyrenean Europe.
Since antiquity, the Mediterranean coast has been of the utmost importance in terms of movement of people, ideas and goods. In the Middle Ages and early modern period, a fragmented road network was created, before being transformed into a radial layout across the peninsula in the late eighteenth century. In the following century, these characteristics were transferred to the railway network, which, due to the diversity of the rail companies operating at the time, was extremely fragmented.
In the Valencian context, the first decades of the twentieth century saw constant calls for improvement to infrastructures and communications with a view to developing the economy. Between the Exposición Regional de Valencia of 1909 and the First World War, improvements to the port were requested, as well as a direct train line to Madrid through Utiel and a Mediterranean railway corridor. Ignacio Villalonga notably proposed the latter in 1918. This and other proposals were blocked or postponed due to the social, economic and political reality at the time. The incorporation of Spain into the European Union in 1986 meant that this idea could be reconsidered. The Mediterranean Corridor, henceforth a supranational issue, is now emerging on the European Union’s network of multimodal corridors.
